The Day I flew Into A Stream

While attached to Bentong Estate,I was placed in charged of its second division and had to travel there as early as 5.00 a.m. to the divisional office for the muster and also in the afternoon to attend to some office work there. So rain or shine that was my routine daily.

Before reaching my division I had to by pass a creepy big turn.in fact that was a blind corner where by many accidents had happened before. Most of the time I had been extremely careful at this corner.Very often slowing down as I connect that curve. No matter how hard one tried the blind corner still was very tricky especially on a rainy day for then it was slippery.

To make that worst there circulating stories of scary tales at that corner.Tales of white apparitions by the side of that road or near its vicinity. The white figures appeared to be like human form that floated above the ground level. However,no one had had any clearer pictures of them to confirm anything more.

As a young man fresh to the plantation way of life I was definitely quite frighten of is existence.Imagine traveling at about 5.00 a.m. to my office every morning. In this hilly region the morning air was often very cold with thick mist.I often end up at my office with wet eye brows and hair because of the mist.My thick jacket was insufficient to keep away the increased coldness.Well tat was part and parcel of the job.

One day after a heavy downfall I again returned to my office for some office work, with me was my companion.

The Long Winding Road To Raub

The whole stretch of long, narrow winding road from Kuala Lumpur to Raub were areas where ambushed gun battle between the bandits and the British forces resulting in heavy casualties on both sides. The most famous one was the ambushed near the 18th mile Tras Road (From Bentong to Raub) where a strong party of Communist bandits ambushed a huge convoy of British military.

Accordingly both sides suffered heavy loses. To the bandits their ambushed were a success despite the lost of many comrades. The British on the other hand were nearly wiped out only to be saved later by reinforcements. Some high ranking military personals were also killed in that battle.

That area is reputed to be haunted by ghosts from both sides.Ghosts of people who did want to die there but were forced to join in that ambush. Many young British soldiers also died without knowing what hit them.Their angry souls will never rest in peace. That was why many have seen apparitions of soldiers and bandits moving around there in late, late night.

Should you drive along that place passed the wee,wee hours be careful.Should there be white figures of soldiers drifting by ,do not take a second look or stop, drive on for your own safety.Or worst, a few female lovely ghosts (bandits).attired in white with messy long flowing hair, waving to you for a lift,if attractive, why not give it a try and find yourself in a ditch the following morning.

Huanted Government Quarters

While I in Bentong in the sixties I have heard of some Governments quarters being haunted ,unfortunately much of them were demolished but I wander those new buildings constructed in their place were similarly haunted?.That is the question.

In the sixties some of the quarters behind the present offices were supposed to be haunted and little people resided there.Of course those buildings were constructed by the colonial government. Those quarters were reputed to be haunted because many people had heard weird and spooky sounds from within late into the night.

Many had also seen whitish apparitions moving around those buildings as if these were insufficient some have even claimed to have faced them late at night fortunately those ghosts never hurt them.

One of those colonial high official bungalow was definitely haunted for deep into the night weird cries could be heard coming from that building as if someone were crying for help.Even those residing had also seen white apparition within its compound. Some thing sinister appeared to be there but no body was sure. However ,there was claimed that someone was murdered there. How far that was the truth no one seem to know.

Another place which was haunted was those area around the count house, that place was just opposite the General Hospital.White figures had be seen drifting about and during the night no one dared go round there. It was so long ago I wander those ghosts have rest in peace or still floating around looking for replacements.

So beware every corner you run around you might run into one or two of them.Happy ghosts hunting.

Necromancy

When I was a small kid in Teluk Anson,I and my brother used to follow our mother around town.I remember one such trip she went with a couple of her friends to consult with a medium in the out skirt of town by the side of the Perak river.

It was an old wooden attap house and in it were altars of various deities. There was the Goddess of Mercy in the Centre,a Chinese ancient warrior with the red face and holding his beard, the Monkey God and many others. As small boys we actually never knew what we were there for,but from those women whispering we overheard that they were there to request the services of the medium to bring back the spirit of a dead man from Hell.

In any case we were told to sit quietly by the side away from them.In side that house they met with an old hunchback woman. One of our mother's friend told that old woman she wanted to speak to her husband who was already dead for many years and requested the old woman's aid to bring his spirit from Hell..

"No problem",she replied in Cantonese and began lighting joss sticks for all "Gods"around. There so many of them and each of them were given three joss sticks stuck in the mugs in front of them.On completing paying her respect to all those "Gods",she sat down on front of a table placed in front of all the altars.

Following she spread a hand full of uncooked rice over the table at the same time chanting her prayers to appease all the spirits present and to call Hell to release that man in Hell temporarily. Then she laid flat on folded arms on the table without stopping her chanting of prayers. What she said in her prayers were quite inaudible and we did not understand what she was marveling.

Actually she was requesting through her prayers to the Guardian of Hell to release the woman's husband momentarily from Hell as his wife wished speak to him.
It did not take long for her to contact Hell and brought that woman's husband spirit up.For within minutes that very the old woman medium sprang up suddenly to the surprised of everyone present. My brother and I also jumped up in shock and fear. That sudden surge really shocked all present.

"Why have come for?",the old woman in a trance as if a man had entered her body shouted in a coarse voice.pointing at the same time at his wife. The old woman acted as though she was an old man with eyes closed and shivering vigorously but looking the way his wife stood. The wife being frightened at the sight replied in a frightening tone,"I had a dream from you.You said in that dream,You are in need of plenty of things and you want me to sent all those to you,but I am not sure what you want?'.

"Why?You stupid woman,I need more money, send me more.I want a new house and servants.Aayai!!!! send me all other things you can think of",the medium replied.
"How are you over there?"she further asked him.

"No good! no good ! Hell very corrupted,I want more money to bride all the officials there otherwise they punished me more seriously, cannot complain to any one - all corrupted,,it is "Boleh Land" here, money talks.Got money no torturing,so send me more money",he further said." Anyway how are my children?""And You???".

"All your sons and daughters are doing fine ,all furthering their studies in the Universities and as for me I have since remarried",said the woman."What??? I went away to Hell - you remarried some else???You....."At this all of a sudden he was recalled back to Hell and the medium felt flat on the table and it took sometime to revive her.For her service she was given an "Ang Pau" by the woman.

The wife was advised to burn more Hell Bank notes to him.together burn him also a big paper house,a paper car plus an effigies of a driver and some maid servants to pacify his spirit. So she gathered all those materials and allowed the medium to send then to Hell on her behalf.Apparently she disposed them to him by burning in the nearby jungle.

Thinking back.I can conclude that there was no truth whatsoever, the old woman medium was just pretending and put up an excellent show. What do you think?

The Ghosts Of The Jungle

At the far end of Bentong Estate was a jungle,a virgin jungle where there were few families of "orang asli" moving around. That jungle was a haven for a vast varieties of wild fruits plus also a home of many types of wild animals which included the ferocious tigers and elephants.

A few honey bears were common sights along those jungle edges. Those cute wild bear were often seem climbing trees but they escaped into the nearby vicinity as soon as seen by people. While I was there I used to follow some of my people into that jungle to look for wild fruits that is during the fruiting seasons. That was the time most of the natives can be located around but they do not bother with us.

I was told many people venturing into these jungle do get lost, lost because the ghosts of the jungle had lured them to stray away from others. Many of them can be located and saved following frantic search for them, failing which they will walked around the jungle in circles until their frightened tired souls broke down and dehydration takes its toll. The poor guys thus wary and wasted away in the jungle.

That was why I was told never to response to any voice or sound calling out my name in the jungle.Never turn around in response to those call, that could be a call from the ghosts of the wild.I was fortunate I followed some experts into that jungle. Those stories about people lost in the jungle were true.In my case my main worries were those swarm of mosquitoes which were constantly harassing us and leeches lurking on the ground.

Therefore I was kept busy beating to smash all those mosquitoes attacking me and to avoid all the leeches giving them no chance to climb on to me legs.No matter how hard I tried some leeches do get on to my legs and enjoyed their meals on me.

Lovely Females Waving For Lift Near The Cemetery

The Tras road leading from Bentong to Ruab similarly was huanted, believe me or not, read on.When attached to Bentong Estate I always stayed back in town before venturing back on the estate in the late, late hours.Very often I had a company with me.

One late night after a mid night show I and my friend wanted to rush home as the clouds looming above appeared to be about to pour down heavily. The sky was awfully dark with distance lightning blistering away.A sign on impending rain to follow and a heavy down pour was expected.Rounds and rounds of strong wind soon roared in.

In town everyone seen running as fast as they could to return home or to avoid getting wet by the rainfall. We,had another eight miles to cover and should we not hurry we will definitely be caught in this rain on the way.Immediately we rode home on my motor-cycle and droplets of rain was felt but we rode on.

There were no others on the road at that hours and all surrounding very dark. The street lights had ended a little distance from the last new village. The rain was beginning to get bigger but we rode on anyway in pitch darkness. As we neared the cemetery my fear suddenly set in within me,just then at the thoughts of devils sent my hair on ends.

To our astonishment we saw two females figures ahead.Fearing those were ghosts waving for a lift I accelerated full speed ahead. Those two females were waving the more frantically beckoning us to stop but I was too frightened to stop or even look at them.

In high speed we passed them, then my pillion rider friend tapped on the back and whispered to me that those two females looked like someone we knew.Thinking they were in trouble I turned back returning to the two females. They were actually standing by the road side but as we neared them they suddenly disappeared into thin air. There were no one around let alone two females.

Sensing some thing seriously wrong I swerved to turn away quickly and ride on straight ahead without looking back. There was no question that we both saw the two apparition of females ghosts by the side of that road which seem to look like friends we knew.I was actually shivering with fear as we rode on steadily at great speed away.

By then the rain was raining down heavily and we were drenched throughout.Within an hour or so we arrived home. Only then we knew we were saved.
From that day onwards whenever I traveled home late I dared looked sideways but straight ahead, there was no questions of stopping again should we meet any body along that stretch of road.

True or not,but we were not the only ones who had encountered such apparition of ghosts, many had seen them before. You all do not have to believe me just try to travel on that stretch of road on a dark, dark, rainy night and you can be sure not to be disappointed.

Woman Ghost Along The Highway

There is a spot where lorries drivers rested on their way back to Kuala Lumpur.it is actually not far from the Toll Plaza (Bentong),an area where the fast flowing stream nearly meets the highway,a place where drivers used to bathe and rested.

A place where two or three cheap prostitutes could once be found at night till the wee hours. Those plying and stopping knew that place many for those attractions. The swift flowing stream provided very clean and cold water for a wash or other things. With slight breeze blowing most of the time it surely was a good resting place and have fun.

To me that place is haunted, the quiet and cool atmosphere gave rise to its spookiness.Knowing those stories about that place made it worst.Once a driver after having his bath at a comfortable spot saw a woman in white standing nearby the road.Being alone and had been away from home for a few days this chap made a cheeky moved towards that woman, thinking she was one of those cheap prostitutes who hanged around that areas at night.

The woman responded to his advances an lovingly suggested they make love. The anxious driver took the woman to a quiet spot slightly further away across the stream. There he began caressing the woman and went a step further to kiss her lips.Within those split joyous seconds he suddenly realized the woman body were not as smooth as it should be.It seem be to soft, rough and sticky.

When he kissed her he had his eyes closed with thrill but as he felt her indifference he opened his eyes real wide.Huh!!! Wah hai!!! Oh dear to his astonishment his eyes met with something very awful and frightening. Those big blood red eyes starring deeply into his and her hair were long and messy. His mouth was kissing her big,big ugly lips with a bloody tongue dangling out tasting his kisses.Fortunately he had the present of mind to immediately pushed her away.

Yea,it was no easy task as he had to struggle hard to free himself and escaped from her clutches.Once loosen from her grip he ran for dear life as fast as he could. How he sprang over those rocks in the stream was beyond imagination and comprehension but he did escaped to reach the road covered with bruises all over his legs and body.Apparently the ghost made no attempts to follow him.

By then on that part of road two other drivers had also made a stopped over to wash themselves.Seeing them he cried out '"Tolong, tolong, ada hantu".(Help, help, got ghost). The few of them gather round together armed with iron rods and long knives.Armed to the teeth but can those weapons stopped the ghosts should she pursuit him???.I am skeptical those can be of much help but no ghost followed him out of that bush.So they were saved on their side.

All of them although quite brave dared not starried there any longer but left almost immediately.Thereafter many dared not stopped there especially at night. They preferred else where where there were more company.

Few months later a few new drivers stopped at that place one fine afternoon. One of them wandered further into the bush to ease himself. While easing himself his roving eyes caught something very odd among the bushes of lallang and shrubs.Curiuos as what held beyond the bush he went near to investigate.

To his utter surprised he discovered the skeletal remains of a woman partly cover by fried leaves and bushes. That took the guts out of him as he shouted to his few friends of his discoveries. All the other rushed in anxiously and uncovered more details of the skeletal remains. The skeleton must have been there for years as nothing was left remaining on site accept for her bones and strains of hair scattered around the skull.

Her hair on closer examinations were brown in color, signifying that skeleton belonged to a foreigner but there was nothing to ascertain that fact.A police report was filed and her skeleton remains duly removed by the Authority. Her identity was left unsolved all this while.

Till today few drivers dared to stop that night.

That woman appeared to be a hitch hiker. She could have been molested and murdered on that spot and left to rot away.Poor woman, she seek revenge.Vengeance on dirty drivers who rape, rod and brutally killed her off.

If not any other smarter suggestions,my dear readers???.

The Long Narrow Winding Road

The old route to Bentong from Kuala Lumpur used to take nothing less than two hours or more by bus or car.Today with the new highway traveling time is shortened by half, besides being shortening its distance.void of dangerous sharp corners, it is very, very much wider.

That old long narrow winding road had taken much tolls. Not only were that road narrow, winding and extremely dangerous with numerous fully loaded huge and heavy timber trucks plying from Bentong to Kuala Lumpur. The numerous blind corners gave rise to many accidents, caused by reckless drivers. Many of them hit and run lorries.

Because of its many fatal accidents people do believe that many corners and stretches of the road were haunted, haunted by ghosts who died cruelly along the way who never knew what really happened or what hit and killed them off out right on the spots. Many of those lorry drivers had quite some awful tales to tell regarding those wandering ghosts.

Such tales seemingly skeptical to many but those who had experienced surely had a lot of long stories to tell. Many of such stories describe accidents between cars and timber lorries where almost whole families were wiped out instantly. The ghosts of such accidents will be left wandering in the wilderness, they will wander on until they find their replacements.

Many drivers driving along these roads sometimes met with white figures along the road walking or floating without legs. Most often were the ghosts of young females with long flowing hair, drifting by the sides of roads ot crossing the road.No drivers on seeing these will ever ever stop to look at them,as such they just pressed on.Accelerating at a faster space away from that spot.

I remember a little Ketari, women tappers were ran over by reckless drivers. In actual fact many of those accidents could be averted, had not been those drivers or their attendents not pulled the head scarfs of those tappers. Therefore these tappers were actually crushed under their lorries' wheel because the cheekiness of those concerned.Of course such culprits were never arrested to be prosecuted.Normally these were hit and run accidents where the drivers and attendants were never apprehended.

Those areas although were now developed with housing estates, but the ghosts still wandered around those areas. Many of its residences around had seen females in white drifting around.Do not believe me just go there after midnight maybe they will met you or better still award you with four digits for the next draw. You enjoy that, but not me.

The spirits of such accidents cannot rest in peace for they will surely seek revenge but alsa their vengeance will never be served as most of these drivers dared drive pass those spots again. With the new highway chances of they meeting those devils slim but the One above is very fair, those culprits will meet their Waterloo somehow maybe later.

The Ghosts At The Waterfall

Believe me that beautiful scenic water fall of Chamang was haunted.During the sixties every year at least one person was drown there.Very often found drown with head struck among the rocks even known good swimmers.

The shallow stream does not seem dangerous at all but strange enough people do get drown there. While I was attached to Bentong Estate in the sixties I often went there to enjoy a dip or so.The cool water and beautiful scene at the fall was very attractive then.I wander it has changed much.

I was quite young then therefore dared not wander about wildly, just sit around and having a simple dip though it was quite shallow. It made me wander how people could get struck within those rocks at the bottom.People through consultation of medium from the temple believe that the waterfall was haunted.

It was generally believe that the ghosts there were constantly on the lookout for replacements.Despite of these stories people still went there and got themselves drown. Many of these youngsters got their head stuck in the rocks at the shallow stream. The stream may be shallow but it was very fast flowing.

Some thing very suspicious were that initial locating of the drowning were difficult.Helpers would checked the stream downward but failed miserably drawing blank and very often a recheck would end up finding the body at the bottom of the stream where he was presumably lost.

Scary or not I do not know then but that surely drove the guts out off me to play the fool there,so were the friends that went with me there.Had it not been the presence of some pretty girls around then I would not had gone there at all, right???.
to be written when inspired.

The Female Ghost

A beautiful female ghost lingered around the narrow bridge in Bentong,Pahang. The bridge located at the back of the General Hospital's mortuary. That bridge was the short cut to Chamang new village. One side lies the river and the other the mortuary.

In the sixties that area was quite bushy, rumours had it that deep into the night many had seen a beautiful female ghost there. With her presence that area were fully scented with perfumes of wild flowers.Although that female ghost never harm anyone the though of her presence surely sent a shiver into every passer by.Besides, being at the back of a mortuary made that more weird and spooky.

It is even more sinister should there be a funeral ceremony at that mortuary.

I have often used that passage to a friend's house many times during the sixties and each time I walked though it I could feel the coldness streaming down my spine. The noise of the fast flowing stream by its side drove more fear into especially in the cold cold breezy night.During late night that bridge was seldom as many preferred the main road.

The cold quiet environment made it doubly sure of the presence of a ghost even without seeing her. This being so because it was already embedded in the mind. After so long I wander that ghost is still around.

Ghost Sleeping By The Roadside

In 1963 I was transfered to Bentong Estate,Pahang. While there I was placed in charged of its second division.90 % Matured Rubber and only a small percentage of young immaure rubber.

I was given lodging on the second of the main office. That building was built of wood and without any electrical supplies,so for lighting I had a harricane lamp.Fortunately I had no problems with my food,it was kindly supplied by the Manager.Being quite a lonely place in the evening I this made frequent trips to town,Bentong.

The plantation was situated some eight miles from town.Very often I had an other man following as companion and we often came home after twelve midnight. The eight miles trip was of winding road.Being an excellent rider I had no problems on the way as I sped home in the dark.

One very windy evening with impending rain in the following I stepped and accelerated full speed a head. However I encountered nothing all the way.It was very cold that, extremely cold with the strong wing wind blowing directly at me and companion.

Against all adversity we reached the turn into the entrance of the plantation. To my surprised and I shook with fright as I saw someone lying on the side and face down on the road. All of a sudden I applied my emergency brakes, that sudden stop brought my aware companion crushing on me and we nearly fell off that motor-cycle.

That man lying on the road in white made us though that it was a ghost lying there. It was motionless and we were scared stiffed to touch it.On closer examination we found that it was an Indian man lying there apparently dead drunk as he smelt liqueur.I shone my motor cycle light on him and recognized him as one of our tappers.

We tried to wake him up but he did not bulged so we rode back to my house which was directly in front.Fearing he might be run over by some useless driver I got the smoke house watchman to carry him to safety.Next morning as I proceed on to the second division he was no where to be found around. I guess he must have been sober by then nd left for home thereafter on his own,

Ghost Tapping Rubber

While I was attached to that plantation,in Gunong Inas Estate,Selama, there were some contract tappers who tapped the slaughtered area as early as 2.00 a.m.in the morning so as to extract better yield of rubber. Therefore, I was curious as how they could about tapping rubber so early in the morning.

So I made the Tapping Contractor to send his "kapala" to escort me into those fields in tapping during those time.Although that was not necessary of me to do that but as I said out of curiosity I just want to have first knowledge on how it was done.

One fine morning,at the appointed time about 2.00 a.m.I met that "kapala" who took me into those field on his motor cycle.Arriving at the field in tapping I visibly saw lights moving in the field. Before going into that field the "kapala" lighted some joss sticks to pray at a small shrine under a tree first. That was to seek protection from the "Keramet"or "Dato" so that no harm will come to us when we go into that field. It seem the rest of the workers also had lighted joss sticks before going in to tap.

The lights in the fields were some distance from each other, because each individual tapper had their own task to tap.We first went to the nearerst tapper who was a woman tapping. She bore a a lamp attached to her forehead as she perform her tapping. As this was a slaughteruing area the trees had nemerous cuts all over and some even had upward tapping cuts.

All these cuts were to extract as much rubber flow out of the tree. That was full exploitation of the trees as the field will be cut down soon giving way to replanting. On going round I found out that most of these tappers were females except for a few men.

These tappers were very daring going tapping so early in the morning, just for slightly better payment.Just imagine moving alone in the darkness with only a head light, tapping from tree to tree, and their nearest companion is a task away which were a few chains away.Besides those under growth between rows of rubber trees were quite bushy.

Their only protection were their sharp tapping knives but these women tappers were definitely very tough ,among them were also some young pretty girls.Later I inquired from that "kapala"whether these tappers had met with any troubles in the fields like wild animals or snakes before. His reply was a firm "No"."These women are very strong, beside they are handy with the sharp tapping knives".

"What about ghosts?",I further asked."We have prayed to the "Dato" before we come into the field so no troubles",he replied.Apparently there was a story behind this as he continued as to why the alter under the tree was for. That was to pay homage and honor the " Kramat"or "Dato"- a sort of guardian of that area.Pray to it before they enter that field to work and they will be protected from evils, even wild animals and snakes.

Hard to believe but every tappers there seem to obey and obediently lid up joss sticks to pray before they worked.According the "kapala"that place was initially
under contract to another. Those days no "Kramet" altar or shrine whatsoever, without which his workers often saw transfiguration white images of an old man near to that tree where the altar was placed.

Somehow that white figure did not harm anyone and very often disappeared within seconds when sighted. As if that were not weird enough tappers tapping early in the morning on a number of occasion met with some one in white tapping rubber.Thinking that was a friend they walked near to it but the figure disappear into thin air.The tree that figure supposed to have tapped did not yield anything.

Seeing that spooky the poor guys bolted in fear, running towards his other friends in other tasks.Thereafter most of the Contractor's tappers refused to return to tap in that field and so the Contractor lost his contract.

A new Contractor was engaged and he consulted with temple dieties before senting his tappers in to tap.The temple medium instructed him to construct a small shrine or altar under that tree in honor of the "Kramet"of that area and to pray to it to seek his permission and protection for his workers to tap in that field.

Eversince that shrine was built no white figures were seen nor were there any other ghost to disturb the tappers .So long everyone paid respect to that "Kramet",all were safe.

to be continued.the ghost will come soon.

The OLd Man Squatting by the Roadside

In February 1962 I was transfered to Gunong Inas Estate,This plantation is situated far into the intirior of Perak,in fact at the edge.Going into that plantation was a problem because no taxi services wet in there, nearly fifteen miles from the main road. The laterite road passed through many other plantations.

Before the emergency it was a communist infested area, despite of the numerous plantations those bandits had been hiding within and the nearby jungle. In short all the plantations had been the fighting ground between the armed forces and the communists.

The emergency was over when I went there. The nearest town was Selama,a one road cowboy town.A quiet town actually but with the surrender of the bandits the town changed drastically after midnight with them drinking hard liqueur. These lot had only a small allowance then but it really surprising how they could drink like a fish.Any way that was solely my opinion.

That plantation being a lonely place I often ventured out to Taiping during week end.usually returning the next early morning.Very often a private car from the planation will out there waiting my return.Normally that would be around 5.30 a.m.

On rainy days the trip back can be very slipery which made the car skidded many a time along that muddy road.At times the car skidded into nearbt ditch and we had to push the car up,ending ourselves covered with mud.All these seemingly nothing.

The driver told me on the way that, that stretch of road was haunted. At times an old man can be seen squatting by the roadside, beckoning people to offer him some help.
No one dared stopped on that lonely.lonely road, for that could be a ghost. Some one did tried to offer some sort of aid but when he went down to help. The old man turned out to be an old tree stump.Terrified at this, the driver fleed as fast as he could from that place.

Thereafter time and again many others had met with that old man squatting by the road side, but not a single soul dared looked at it or render it any aid.The stories continued to spread like wild fire.

So each time I traveled back in the early morning I was always on the lookout for anything weird and spooky.I saw nothing but some old tree stumps here and there along the way. These do appeared to look like an old man squatting but lifeless - tree stumps.

Wandering Ghosts

While working in the plantation in Taiping,Perak,I took regular trips by taxis home to Teluk Anson. Each time we passed a plantation after Kuala Kangsar, the taxi divers would tell me ghostly stories.

One of which was the wandering ghosts.Passing that place late at night can be fatal because there were chances they come across wandering ghosts,Ghosts attired in white drifting above ground level without legs. Some times it could be a beauty waving for good Sameritan for a lift. With such stories in the air no drivers dare even stopped let alone have good look at them.

However there were stories that some good soul had given lift to lovely females in white attire but on arrival of their destinations as requested,to their utter surprised the passenger were no more at the back seat.It did not even say "good bye" before leaving. It had disappeared without harming anyone. That put the poor driver in fright and drove off quickly in fear.

Despite all these stories nothing bad had happened.Whatever it was people continued seeing those lonely ghosts beckoning someone to give them a lift.
Stories had it that the area was a rubber plantation and believed that under each tree of that plantation were buried a laborer, mercilessly murdered by a European planter.

Much later I found out that there were no real substance in those stories.Actually that area was a burial ground for Indian plantation workers. So those stories were false no truth whatsoever.

Ghosts Playing On The Road

We shifted to a rubber plantation about two miles from town,I was fifteen then and we resided in the quarters provided.Yes,we were very poor then but somehow we managed to go by.

Life in the plantation was seemingly lonely and most of my friends were living in town,so I cycled out every evening to join them.I mixed freely with at least two groups of people. The earlier group were students with whom I roamed with around town singing and watching girls drifting by.

Being school boys this group normally returned home before 10 p.m.,as for me I stayed around town with another group at the Amusement Park. This group consisted a rich lamed young man,a half Bangali/Malay (a beef seller) and another young Indian young guy who later like me became a planter.

We normally loitered around the Amusement Park, having a bowl of assam laksa,a cup of coffee or better still enjoying a bowl os soup sold by a very fat Makmak,In most cases all these friends gave me those treats for I was not working while tyhey were. Those days a cup of "kopi O" only ten cents or maybe fifteen.Assan Laksa another ten cents or so only. The bowl of soup similarly the same ten cents or twenty that was all.

Much later when I turned bad real bad I had another gang - a foursome.By then we were notoriuos ad fearful.Yes those were the days.

Now returning to my ghost story, during one of those days when heavy rain had prevented me from going home before twelve. The rain apparently not going to stopped and when the drops were dwindling I had to forced myself to cycle home in the rain.

As I cycled home the tiny drops of rain was wetting my whole body and before long I was drenched in the rain. The accompanying strong breeze that followed made me shivered with cold.I was terribly enclosed in cold as I cycled as fast as I possibly could. The street lights were dim and lighting between poles were quite a distance.

The last lamp post that bored the last light was about two hundred meters from my house.Nevertheless I bashed on with head bending down, with time and again raising my head to look ahead. There it was under the final lighting came four figures dressed in white attires moving breath wise across the whole with of the road. You know what?

Those for figures were playing and running away from the last light on the road.Although they were running away from the light from my distance I could see them clearly. To my hoorror they were not running on legs for there were none.Yes-----they apparently were drifting in the air,but they soon disappeared into the distance as the forged ahead on that dark, dark road.

They were definitely not human but horrifying ghosts and there were four of them.Terrified and having no other alternative I braved on ahead peddling towards them.As I was nearing them, all of a sudden those ghostly figures disappeared into thin air of the darkness ahead.

That drove more fear into my young soul and I cycled as hard and as fast as I could to reach home.At home I threw down my bicycle slumped on the nearest cement steps and began crying in fright, breathing hard trying to catch my breath..My mother head my cry rushed out to ask me why?.

I cried out in fear that I just saw a few ghosts few seconds ago on the road.
Thereafter I refrained peddling home on late late night. But odd enough I never saw them again.Maybe they though I was friendly with them.

The Headless Ghosts(At Chinese School of Teluk Anson)

As a young boy about twelve/thirteen years old our family had shifted to Immigration Road where my father was a timber retailer.Every morning we had to walk to school and it was slightly more than a mile away.

On the way we would walked passed one side of a Chinese School. Those days the school was not properly fenced, only a row of hibiscus roughly grown as partition between the road and school. So as we passed by we could see the inside of the school. The classrooms were then constructed about a chain or so from the fence,so there were vacant space within.

That vacant space was reputed to be the torture and execution grounds of the dreadful Japanese soldiers. The very fact that we knew of its frightful past made us aware of what happened during the Japanese occupations. There were so many horrible stories regarding their outrageous atrocities.

Out of these killings later came the horrifying stories of bloody ghosts or otherwise headless ones not to mention those weird, frightful and sinister cries in the wee hours of the night especially a rainy and misty night. Those cries for mercy as if someone were being tortured and shrieking sounds seeking vengeance were commonly in the air.

"Give me back my head",were common phase my friends used to tease us from behind as we walked past that place,We were tensed as strolled by but those imitations with those frightful words did scared us at times. That was why as we passed that area our hair stood on ends and dared not steal a glance side ways.

We had friends residing just opposite those areas then and their horrid stories increased our fear as we passed the horrifying place. My friends staying there dared not even their windows in the night.

Presently those vacant area were newly constructed class rooms, with so much activities around daily those concerned hope would ultimately erased its terrifying past. But can that be forgotten just like that.I say no,those ghosts still existed in thin air, they maybe pushed to a corner but they are still around.

Many people can still hear weird sounds coming from with those class rooms, maybe they are now more comfortable with so many kids to play and study with them.So do not be surprised should one fine day your kids come telling of her new found "class mates".

Ghosts seeking vengeance do not disappear that easily, maybe if you put a Japanese soldier there ,that could aroused their anger and then watch out for that raging ghosts. Then someone will surely be hurt, take heed.

The Haunted Houses In Teluk Anson

There were a number of haunted houses in Teluk Anson in the fifties, now let me tell you all what I know.As a teenager I and my friends used to cycle passed those houses, hoping to steal a glance of those houses at night.Rumours had it that there were weird voices coming out from within those houses but did we heard them???.

No,never, except seeing some owls flying about but at night all those houses seem very weird and spooky. The silence dark night and spooky looking trees around and with no souls moving around made them more frightening.Any way as youngsters we moved around them in group never alone. There was no way we dared venture near them alone, no way.

During my school going days in the fifties two better known ghost houses were the one situated at the entrance road of Speedy Road. This was the mansion of a local Chinese rich man. However, this house only very few of their descendants resided within it.With all its windows and doors shut most of the time and quiet compound fenced, the place seem lifeless.Really weird and spooky even those days.

With such a beautiful mansion most of its relatives choose to stay in houses elsewhere, this really irked many of us and support the issue that that mansion was really haunted, though their relatives disclaimed that fact. There were no denying that many of its past workers had no dispute over that.In any case a huge mansion with little residents surely very inviting ghosts to dwelt within.

However to- day that house still in tagged and can be viewed from the road side.It could be a heritage of good old Teluk Anson, presently had gained city status.

Along the first sharp bend of Batak Rabit Road once stood an old colonial building which everyone named the "Rumah Hantu".How scary it was to be but there were people living within it.A beautiful girl my junior once lived there with her family, haunted or otherwise many teenage boys used to visit her and that included my kid brother.

So ghosts or no ghosts, got beautiful damsel in within somehow never in distressed, she truly attracted many young boys there. The ghosts therein never bothered with all those present there, guess that were friendly ghosts. So the boys had no fear just tackle on.

When I was working in the plantation in Taiping,Perak, may family shifted to a tiny bungalow which apparently was also known as a haunted house. It seem to have been left vacant for sometime, many trees around shading that house giving it a weird and frightening atmosphere. However, those were easily overcome with the removal of all those unwanted plants around.

It was no more eerie looking when I went back for holidays,as all those awkward looking shady trees were removed. But further behind our rented house was another old wooden double stories house was also another haunted house. What irked us were that all the occupants of that house just like to live on the ground floor. Now why was that???.

Yes,the up stair was haunted. In the wee hours of the night, those tenants down on the ground floor could hear weird sounds and foot steps walking about right above them. However very poor people with no other places to go,they were forced to stay.Another thing we heard of was they reside in that house rental free.It seemed that house belonged to a relative of their,so that was why they stayed there for free.

With free rental they just lived on there, ghosts or no ghosts beside those devils did not disturbed nor harmed them in any way.Only horrid noises from up above just turn a deaf ear to their existence and everything will be fine.Either way apparently they seem a happy lot residing there,a family of eight,a couple with two children, two teenager sister, their aged parents. Those ghosts within seem to have a good relationship with them, thus they lived happily together.

The latest addition of ghost houses in Teluk Anson should be the abandoned home of the Raja Muda.During our school days that was the official residence of the Raja Muda.Presently this abandoned house had been partly demolished but all its pillars and cement walls still partly in tagged the place seemingly huanted .The thich busghes and unkept trees made the house more sinister and weird.

Many people claimed to have seen figures deep into the night in that building. Some even claimed to have heard weird and spooky sounds coming from within.Don't believe me find out for yourself should you be there.I think no guards were posted there now.

Four digits punters,go there should want strike it rich, those lovely female ghosts awaits you.

The Ghosts of Perak River

As a young child I was made to believe that there were ghosts plying along the length of Perak River always on the look out for a replacement for their predicaments.Perhaps these were stories to frighten us kids from playing by the river sides which were deep and at times fast flowing, and anyway too deep for us and partly because this river were infested with crocodiles.

Believe me we really took those tales to heart and stayed away from that river. To worsen our believes, apparently that wretched river really took at least a live every year. But it was not big deal really as some poor soul will definitely drowned in that river.Maybe it was just an coincidence with such a lengthy river which meandered round the town.

Even good swimmers had drowned in that nasty river, with many claiming they were dragged down to the river bottom by river ghosts looking for a replacement.Pulled down by ghosts???,maybe they were unlucky to be pulled away to the bottom by crocodiles, one never know.

Many also rely on the river for their daily household used ,for washing their clothes as well as taking their bath, lost their balance and ultimately fell into the fast flowing river especially during low tide. What ever it was many have lot their lives every year in that river and there can be any dispute over these.

There were also many small whirl pools especially at the mouth of many rivers leading into the main river. They do not seem dangerous but still many still claimed that many lives were lost around there.

In our young days the river was also a main means of transport for those living across and up river. Those were days where there were not many roads so the river were their main mean of transportation for them as well as for their crops. Many rubber plantation were also established across the river and their main means of transportation was by boats and ferries.

Capsizing of boats and sampan those days were common where many lives were lost.Bodies dragged down into the river only to be recovered in the following days to come.Sad really when such tragedies occurred.

"Take Our Friend"

Those days punters for three digits and four digits often resoughted to worshipping dieties under big trees or remote jungle areas and more daring ones adhered to worshipping at cemetery especially those new graves where a pregnant female had just been buried there.

Praying under the big tree could not be that dangerous as those were normally deities worshiped regularly by others.Whereas jungle deities could be fatal. When praying here many had the services of men going into a trance to give them their winning numbers. Those days there were known cases where the person going into a trance were hurt by biting their own fingers and body. This being so because a fierce tiger deity had gone into his body turning him into a carnivorous animal demanding for a meaty meal before giving in to their demand for the four correct numbers.

Well.as far I was concerned these were only stories and I had not experienced them first hand.Anyway they were told by regular punters but such stories could be true. That was why I say when going to seek spiritual aids for a small fortune, always go along with trusted friends, friends that do not give you away in times of need.

During those days in Taiping there was also another popular tales about few friends who went into a cemetery to seek their fortune. Before that they had scanned through the latest deaths roll buried in that cemetery with the help a caretaker there.Running through the list they selected the grave a recent burial of a pregnant woman.

Their trip was well prepared with sluaghtered chicken, roast pork and an assortment of fruits.
Joss sticks, white candles together with Joss papers which were indispensable. They also had the service of a person who was an expert in going into a trance.Altogether there were about six of them.

They arrived at the cemetery past midnight and as the place was remote they did not leave the car without a guard. One of them was selected to stay behind to take guard of the car, while the rest went into the grave yard which was a distance away. They arrived at a new grave, that was the grave of a pregnant woman who had just passed away recently.

Offerings and Joss sticks were all lighted up before the grave stone. When all were ready the man who was supposed to go into a trance speared a sharp green bamboo into the middle of the grave.Such poking of a length of green bamboo into the middle of a grave is never good omen. That bamboo was to lure out the spirit of the dead women from her grave, which was considered a cruel deed to the dead.

These wretched people without due considerations just did that cruel thing.Following he began to chant his prayers. He chanted and chanted for more than an hour but still no sign of the ghost coming forthwith.Despite these he never gave up and began continuing chanting his prayers relentlessly.

Everyone around were getting restless in the very cold and mosquitoes filled environment, but all remained silent accept for a few beatings on their bodies and hands to chase away the mosquitoes which seemed to be a plenty that night. The cold breeze blowing did not eased their anxieties nor tension.

Then out of no where the man going in the trance suddenly gave a loud weird shrieked of a fearful woman in raged.Shouting,"Why you wicked man,why are you doing this to me???"."Your piercing of the green bamboo really hurts, anyway what you want from me???",she demanded in frightening shrieking tone."You are frightening my baby as well,What do you want from me???".She continued to speak through the man in trance.

'Please, we are very poor soul and we seek your help to enrich ourselves, please give four winning digits for the next race".,the leader of the group asked.Continuing the man in trance murmured many inaudible things which those present could not understand. Then they pleaded with her to be more clear and specific.

She appeared annoyed and shrieked frightfully at them said,"I need a man to accompany me.Can anyone of you fill that place???".That struck fear into the few worshipers withall shaking their stupid heads vigorously, but after some thought one smart alec suggested that she take their friend guarding the car.

Smart move since all did not want themselves to be her company, the best alternative was their unknowing friend who was guarding their car."take him that is guarding the car,he is a very nice guy, suitable for you",said the smart guy,all others aagreed in unision. What are friends for???.Such unworthy friends he had, giving him away without his knowledge.

In their mind that just a request from the ghost which colud not be true nor materealized that easily.Besides they thought when they came to the bridge they will surely think of a way out of that mess. But do not play, play with the ghost especially a pregnent female ghost they can be fearlessly ruthless.

The ghost in tranced gave them the four numbers loud and claer on a paper, well written.Having done so the ghost left. The happy men burnt all the joss sticks and insense papers etc and before going pulled off the bamboo from that grave. The man in the trance made sure of that otherwise it seem the ghost might follow them home, the that will be more fatal.

They all returned home without telling the poor guy taking care of the car what really had transpired.Well as for the four digits ,all banged heftily on those numbers. You know what that number was announced as the first winning four digits and all struck if rich.

All struck it rich including the fellow in charge of the car,in happiness that promise they made came clearly to their minds and before they could offer any help to that man. That man at that very instance was knocked by a car and passed away that very instnce. All of a sudden their happiness turned gloomy and saddened by the death of their friend. He was their good friend but were they his good old friends???.

Friends in need really.

When going any where in groups never leave your so-called friends, let alone allow them to make your dicision for you.Do not be like that guy guarding the car.

Give Me Back My Head

Later,I found out that the building next to the plantation office, which a stone's throw from the bungalow was a military camp, housing initially the Japanese,British forces and later the Malay regiment. This were not so scary until I heard the weird stories of tortures and murders that happened around those areas.

I also discovered that that was also the place where the Japanese secretly tortured and executed "spies"during the Japanese occupation.Thinking of it made my hair stood on ends.just imagine a place where they put to death so many people.Further there was another place where they really chopped off the heads without any investigations.

That place I dreaded to venture near during my field work because it was reputed to be a haunt by headless ghosts seeking their lost heads.Tappers dared not tapped that area until the daylight were fully bright, and no one were braved sufficiently to to do otherwise. It was said that many really did came across headless ghosts begging for the return of their heads.

"Give me back my head" was a common phrase among many workers while teasing each other, during the dark.Should that be not spooky to frighten the guts out of you,but it did to me as a young and fresh planter.

Farther down the plantation along its boundary was a railway track where communists guerrillas ambushed the British forces. In that ensuing gunfight many were killed and injured on both sides. However in the end the British managed to chase those infiltrartors back into the jungle hideouts.

That area was also haunted and not many dared to go near there .It was claimed that the ghosts in that area were seeking replacements every year along those tracks.Strange enough there was always a death along that railway line somehow. That could never be any coincidence.

The spirits of the dead lingered on over there, you do not have to believe me just venture there to try those out yourself.Perhaps you were just another coward like me.
Admittedly my younger days I was scared stiffed of ghosts,no,no never these days because I dared even to kiss them outright.Any challenges???

Nowadays should you come across any ghosts you do not called "the Ghosts Blasters",you call "Cheah".

Nurishing Food Of the Little Devils

I was told those little devils were kept or bred by the "bomohs" surviving on food littered around by human beings especially the female folks. They were released deep into the night to seek them flying around randomly.Surprisingly these little devils does not harm anyone and seemingly tamed or harmless.

Many women folks disposed of their periodic wastes recklessly, discarding every where convenient to them. Many of course washed them down the toilet bowls. These were very nourishing food for the little devils.Rural folks or plantation workers discard them by burying them or hanging them on branches of trees, allowing them to dry away in the air..

The placenta and other wastes of new born, all rapped up in a bundle were disposed like that, by hanging on branches in all plantations.Initially,I was caught by surprised at these and made embarrassing inquiry about them, because I was unaware of those funny things danging among branches very near to the line sites. These perhaps were old practices in the plantation maybe things have changed by now.

All these offered good nutritious food for the little devils. That was why the little devils can be seen flying about seeking these food. The other known alternatives of devils' food will be the burning of incenses ,joss papers and sticks.Chinese believers fed ghosts "Hell Bank notes" printed by local printers.Chinese believes that ghosts inhaled the smoke of incenses and joss sticks as food.

Many a times cakes and slaughtered chickens, ducks, goats and other animals were in the offerings.Come the Chinese All Ghosts Day in August (Chinese Calender the seventh month) the month of the ghosts whereby the hell gates were opened to released out into the world for a breather,to see their love ones and perhaps to settle scores.

Within that month scores of wandering ghosts will roamed the world over for food as well. Many thus prayed to them for good health, prosperity and continued success in all undertakings. Here the Hokkien went about treating it as a great holiday of offerings.

These were my earlier encounters with ghosts, there are more to recount as I continued working in the planting sector, please follow.
