The Attic

The colonial bungalow of St.Andrew Estate was residence to all white Manager,I was second non-white to occupy that bungalow. My predecessor stayed there for hardly three months. There after I moved in,that was towards the end of 1970.

It wa a massive building with thick pillars and walls.Extremely airy because of its numerous windows throughout. All timber structures were made of selected Chengal hardwood except for the windows which had many small wooden planes. It required a skillful carpenter to repair any of those windows.

Those days all Managers' bungalows in plantations were never fenced let alone the one in St.Andrews.That bungalow was built at the far end of a field where no people or workers had any reasons to walk near to it.No one had ever dared ventured near it especially at night,Besides I had two huge Alsatians watching from their cages.

Such a huge building yet had only three big bedrooms.Of course the master bedrom was fantastically large. It was larger than the two bedrooms put together.Attached to it was a large bathroom and and equally big as the bathroom a baby's room plus a tiny verandah.

The attic was also very big and vast space. At the back end was the bungalow's water tank with the rest empty.Small bats were among its residence but the number were negligible.Spraying on these bats were a pair of barn owl`s.In the deep of the night the owls will be chasing the bats for their meals.

The chase often gave rise to spooky feeling that something sinister were moving up above the attic. My wife was often caught in such a frightening predicaments especially when I was out in the night. That loneliness drive fear into her even with the company of maids.

When it rained and accompanied with the strong cold cold wind the situation became more alarming.Of course I could not blame her for her ignorance .It took quite a while for her to get used to that situation.Somehow she sooner or later seem used to them as we stayed there for exactly yen long years.

To me that bungalow was not haunted but my family differed from me.Those eerie sounds from the attic still drove fear into them.Very often they do not like to be left alone there.
